paul,

here in the philippines, cheating thru hand signals(coming from parents/coaches) is prevalent. plus we have the added game-fixing, e.g. giving away games to lower rated players for monetary gain, or fixing results to corner the bulk of the prize money(local tourneys).
unfortunately here, most people don't believe it's happening, or they have closed their eyes and ears and pretend that everything's ok.
i believe cheating is happening worldwide and unless we accept the fact that it is real, we cannot do something about it.

i am sad because cheaters have tainted the royal game.

re: "... that champion Vladimir Kramnik was somehow cheating during his frequent trips to the restroom."

I think there was a second 2006 Toiletgate, involving a lower-ranking player in the Philadelphia World Open. The frequency w/which this fellow "ascended the throne" similarly elicited suspicion, and a grandmaster not enrolled in the tournament discovered TheAccused's last 20+ moves to be an exact match to those Shredder© would have played.

I don't recall the denouement.

There are few children ages "eight and below" who do not visit the restroom w/mind-numbing frequency.
